You told us that you;

  • Can easily charge your car at home or work
  • Would be willing and able to recharge your vehicle during the day or mid journey
  • Travel more than 50 miles in a typical day

Based on your preferences you could be best suited to the following fuel type(s);

PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Pure Electric Vehicles (also known as battery electric vehicles - BEVs) run off one power source only - the electric battery. There is no internal combustion engine present is e.g. traditional vehicle engine that runs on petrol, diesel, gas fuel, which means they don’t produce tailpipe emissions and are hence the cleanest vehicles to drive.

Thanks to recent advances in technology, BEVs are suitable for a range of driving styles and increasingly longer distances, with many BEVs now doing more than 200 miles on a single charge. Vehicle charging is a key consideration so easy access to a charging point at home or work is a must and route planning and preparation is key for longer journeys.

Some pure electric vehicles have a range*** of less than 150 miles**** so these are really only suitable for predominantly urban driving.

EXTENDED RANGE ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Range-extended electric vehicles (E-REVs) essentially bridge the gap between plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars. The vehicles run on electricity only, but unlike pure electric vehicles they also have a generator on board to recharge the battery when it is depleted. This eliminates range anxiety as the vehicle will run as long as it is refuelled with petrol. The vehicle is never directly powered by the petrol engine like other hybrids and is always driven by the electric motor. This provides fuel consumption and emission benefits over a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

Suitable for much longer journeys due to larger battery and on board generator. These vehicles can be used in urban* and extra-urban** use and for higher mileage scenarios than a pure electric vehicle.

You should carefully consider the type of vehicle that is right for your individual or business circumstances. This is a guide to some of the questions you should consider and provides an indication as to the type of vehicle which may be suitable. There will be other factors this guide does not take into account such as cost and affordability, and any changes to your future circumstances you may be aware of.

*Urban refers to driving in a city
**Extra Urban refers to driving on country roads and motorways
***Manufacturer’s figures may not reflect real world driving - actual range may vary as a result of driving mode and style, additional electricity using equipment, load/number of passengers, outside temperature, terrain and other factors. Please ensure you select a vehicle suited to your needs.
