Why used EV leasing is accelerating in popularity
Collette Gunning, Remarketing Senior Manager - Lex Autolease
Advantages of Lex Autolease's Used EV offering
It’s been two years since we first introduced our used electric vehicle (EV) service offering and following its success, we launched our dedicated EV portal a year ago, which has since become a key part of our lease proposition.
We started off with a pool of just 50 second-hand EVs, which has now grown to 1,000 vehicles in refurb at any one time, and will double in the next year.
That’s because it’s a service that ticks so many boxes for our customers and their employees.
First, it's quick; you can visit the used EV leasing portal, choose the car you want and have it delivered to your doorstep in just two weeks, which can help firms rapidly electrify their fleets.
It’s also completely transparent; every car has a gallery of images that make any imperfections absolutely clear, so what you see is what you get. Every vehicle is thoroughly inspected by trained technicians, comes with a minimum six-month MOT, and for extra peace of mind, all battery electric vehicles include an Aviloo battery health check.
It’s flexible too; unlike new vehicles, where leasing contracts start from two years, you can agree a lease on a used EV from just 12 months up to 48 months.
And it provides great value; used leasing pricing will typically be 20% to 30% lower than a new EV.
That means drivers can access EVs that would normally be outside their price range, and I’ve seen firsthand how delighted that can make them.
Supporting ESG
When we launched our used EV leasing service, sustainability was our priority. Vehicle fleets play a major role in cutting carbon emissions, but with EVs often costing more upfront than petrol or diesel cars, we wanted to make them more accessible.
We’re grateful to the customers who have been with us from the start of the trial and have shared feedback that has helped us refine the service, including tech firms Telent and Daisy Communications.
Mark Dickinson, Daisy’s Head of Field Operations, said: “We landed on [Lex’s] used car leasing scheme, which offers all the benefits of leasing new vehicles without the delays in manufacturing and delivery, while also benefiting our ESG status and reducing monthly rental charges."
“The team are extremely responsive and offer a superb service when it comes to vehicle sourcing, provision and maintenance.”
Evolving and optimising
Feedback like this helps us evolve and optimise the service we offer.
For example, we’ve expanded the pool to include plug-in hybrids, after feedback that they would be better suited to high mileage drivers.
We’re also working to enable customers to extend the lease on an EV that they initially leased from new, so they only pay used leasing pricing, saving money while avoiding the hassle of replacing their car.
We’ll keep developing and improving our used EV offer, but the results speak for themselves - it’s proven to give our customers the flexibility to choose between new and used vehicles within their fleets, depending on their needs.
