How to make the most of every charge when the temperature drops

EV batteries don’t like the cold any more than we do

Cold, frosty conditions affect battery efficiency and charging speed. This means your battery takes longer to charge, so it’s worth factoring this into your daily routine.

Give yourself a bigger range buffer

Winter journeys are less predictable, so it’s best to start with more charge than you think. This gives you a safety net if bad weather, roadworks or diversions make your journey longer than anticipated. 

Top up your battery before the charge gets low

This is especially important if you’re planning to use public chargers. Topping up early gives you more options if charging points are busy or unavailable, or bad conditions cause delays. 

Use scheduled charging where possible

Many EVs have apps that let you schedule charging times. If you’re charging at home, on an energy tariff with off-peak rates, this can really help you make the most of cheaper overnight charging during colder months.

Take advantage of preconditioning if your EV supports it

Some EVs warm the battery before you start charging. Known as preconditioning, this helps the battery reach a more effective temperature, which really helps if you want to rapid charge. You can often access this through your navigation system, app or vehicle settings.

Use navigation to plan your charge

Modern EVs give you an idea of how much charge you’ll have at your destination. This helps you plan trips more confidently, and factor in any charging stops you might need on the way. 

Some EVs can also prepare the battery in advance, so you spend less time at a rapid charger. But remember, plan your routes and charging stops carefully, with a backup option in case of delays or detours.

Keep your charging cable to hand

Even if you think you have enough charge for your round trip, winter journeys can still catch you by surprise.

Make it a habit to keep your charging cable on board for unplanned top-ups. Store it out of sight, but within easy reach, if you need it quickly.
