Are EVs right for me?

What the LEXperts say

Electric vehicles (EVs) are quieter, cleaner, and offer significant benefits for everyone. The right EV for you depends on your daily lifestyle, budget, and driving needs. Thankfully, there are plenty of models available to suit a wide range of requirements and budgets.

EV considerations

There are several important factors to consider when switching to an EV:

  • Miles covered. If you are regularly driving long distances, opting for a longer-range vehicle could reduce the need for regular charging breaks.
  • Passenger requirements. EVs can provide large spaces for both seating and storage space due to their efficient design and lack of traditional engine components.
  • Charging access. Be aware of workplace and local charging points. If you have off-street parking, a home charger can be installed for the ultimate convenience of overnight charging.
  • Driving in Ultra Low Emissions or Clean Air Zones. EVs can help reduce the cost of driving in these areas, with fully electric vehicles being exempt from charges.
  • The whole life cost. This captures your full cost-saving potential of long-term EV ownership, including savings on fuel, maintenance, and more.

EV benefits

Most EV drivers never go back to petrol. If you're thinking about making the switch, keep these key benefits in mind:

  • Affordable leasing options. There are flexible plans to suit different budgets, making EV ownership more accessible than ever.
  • Lower running costs. Save on fuel and take advantage of tax incentives designed to make EVs even more cost-effective.
  • Convenient charging. With more home, workplace, and public charging options available, keeping your EV powered up is easier than you might think.

Vehicle choice

Regardless of your priorities, there’s an EV to suit your lifestyle. Most models now offer a range of at least 200 miles on a single charge, making them a practical choice for everyday use.

When choosing an EV, consider the vehicle’s ease of handling, real-world range, and charging speeds. Some cars can add more than 200 miles of range in just 20 minutes using ultra-rapid chargers.

You’ll find options ranging from compact models that prioritise efficiency to luxury vehicles that deliver executive comfort and cutting-edge technology.

Battery electric vehicles (BEV) produce zero tailpipe emissions and reduce carbon emissions substantially. If a BEV is unsuitable for you, plug-in hybrids are efficient when used primarily in EV mode. However, they need to have a significant percentage of their journeys carried out in electric mode to make them both cost and environmentally effective.
