Which EV is right for me?
What the LEXperts say
Choosing the right electric vehicle (EV) can maximise convenience and reduce your costs. While plug-in hybrids (PHEV) often offer lower upfront costs, electric vehicles can deliver greater savings and higher sustainability benefits.
The value of BEVs
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) can offer long-term savings, but they don’t just cut fuel and maintenance costs – they can also offer extra space and a smoother drive.
Battery ranges vary by model and manufacturer so your purchase will need to suit your individual requirements. In this way, your considerations around use and mileage are the same as you would make for a petrol or diesel vehicle.
BEVs produce zero tailpipe emissions and reduce carbon emissions substantially. In our view they are the best choice for the environmentally conscious. Many boast impressive ranges, too – with almost 300 miles being the average on a single charge.
If you regularly drive longer distances, long-range electric vehicles are also good choice, with some managing up to 400 miles or more on one charge. They tend to be pricier than lower-range EVs but they bring strong sustainability and efficiency credentials.
The value of hybrids
For those worried about range or charging anxiety, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) may be an ultra-low emissions alternative. PHEVs are suitable for regular small trips and occasional long trips. They can drive in petrol/diesel or electric mode (or both simultaneously). In our view the largest benefit is the ability to charge the on-board battery by a charge point, benefiting from the cost savings of using electricity from the grid.
But it is crucial that PHEVs are regularly plugged in to maximise the efficiencies of driving in EV mode. Otherwise, they function primarily as a petrol/diesel vehicle with the extra weight of the battery, which can negatively affect fuel efficiency and emissions.
Charging considerations
Before choosing an EV, consider where you’ll charge. Home charging is the most convenient, workplace charging can cut costs, and public chargers keep you topped up on the go. Plus, new regulations mean public charging points ensure price transparency, ease of payment, and 99% reliability for rapid charge points. Understanding your options ensures a hassle-free switch to electric.
Most EVs offer a range of 200 to 300 miles per charge, so choosing the right model ensures you have all the range you need without paying for more than necessary.
